SECTOR

AI visibility for New Zealand law firms

AI named more than 1,300 different New Zealand law firms across the 440 tests we ran, and the ten most named firms take only 14 percent of all mentions between them. That makes law the most open field of any sector we track.

No firm owns this answer. That is the opportunity and the warning in the same number.

In legal, AI cites law firms directly rather than directories

The pages AI quotes most in this sector are firm websites, not review sites. That is unusual. In real estate, one review site gets pointed at more often than any brand, and in financial services a comparison site leads. In law, AI mostly points at the firms themselves.

It means a well built firm website competes directly. There is nothing standing between it and the answer.

Every sector we measure, ranked. A lower number means the two answers name almost entirely different businesses, so a business has to be won twice.

What we ran

We put buyer questions to five AI tools across five practice areas: commercial, employment, family, personal injury and property law, with 44 questions in each. The questions cover who is best, who is credible, what it costs and who to shortlist, in 18 New Zealand locations.

Nearly 60 percent of the mentions we recorded came with a source, which means AI is usually willing to show where it got the information when it names a firm.

What this means if you run a law firm

With 1,300 firms named and no clear leader, being named at all is achievable, and being named every time is where the value sits. The firms that win are the ones an AI can read, understand and quote without guessing.

The 13 percent match matters as much. A firm that turns up when an AI searches can be missing when the same AI answers from memory, and most buyers only ask once.

how we measure what AI says

Common questions

Do AI answers name specific law firms in New Zealand?

Yes. Across 440 tests we recorded more than 1,300 named New Zealand firms, and around 60 percent of those mentions came with a source. AI will name a firm and show where it got the information, as long as it can find something it can read.

Which practice areas did you measure?

Commercial, employment, family, personal injury and property law, with 44 questions in each, across 18 New Zealand locations.

Is it harder for a small firm to be named than a large one?

Less than you would expect in this sector. The ten most named firms take only 14 percent of mentions between them, which is the least crowded result of any market we measure.
